Grants

Whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is still open.

It is open in England and Wales. The money is a discount on the installer’s quote for a heat pump, or in limited cases a biomass boiler. You do not apply to Ofgem yourself, and this site does not apply for you.

Checked 13 October 2026 against Ofgem property-owner guidance version 5.1. Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Malta directory are outside this scheme.

The grant is not a quote for the installation. The installer shows the discount on their own quote. Local Trades UK does not redeem the voucher.

The amounts in the current guidance

Ofgem’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme property-owner guidance, version 5.1, covers applications properly made on or after 28 April 2026. The uplifted off-gas grant in that document applies to applications properly made on or after 21 July 2026. The grant is taken off the quote and the invoice. It is paid to the installer. You do not receive it as cash.

Grant values in Ofgem property-owner guidance V5.1. The installer decides which value the property qualifies for.
Technology Grant Window named in the guidance
Air-to-water heat pump, or ground-source heat pump £7,500 Applications properly made on or after 28 April 2026
Air-to-air heat pump, residential properties only £2,500 Same guidance edition
Biomass boiler, limited circumstances £5,000 Extra location and air-quality rules apply
Air-to-water or ground-source, off the gas grid, replacing oil or LPG £9,000 Applications properly made from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027

Self-build properties are not eligible for the £9,000 uplift. The same guidance says they may still qualify for £7,500 if the rest of the rules are met. Ofgem’s public scheme page also lists water-source heat pumps with the £7,500 grant. Your installer checks the technology against the current rules.

Who can use it

The guidance says the scheme supports low-carbon heating in existing buildings in England and Wales. It is aimed at properties replacing a fossil-fuel system, such as gas, oil or LPG, or an electric heating system that is not already a heat pump. The fossil-fuel system has to be fully replaced. You cannot keep a gas or oil boiler running beside the new system.

You choose an MCS-certified installer who can apply. That installer checks the property, submits the application, and takes the grant off the quote. Ofgem contacts you to confirm your identity and your consent. After the voucher is issued, the installer has to complete the work, commission the system and redeem the voucher within 3 months for an air-to-water heat pump, an air-to-air heat pump or a biomass boiler, and within 6 months for a ground-source heat pump. If that window is missed, the installer may have to withdraw the voucher and apply again, and you consent again.

Properties the guidance says are usually out

  • Social housing, including shared ownership.
  • Most new-build properties. Some self-builds can qualify under a separate test in the guidance.
  • An address that has already had public funding for a low-carbon heating system.

Air-to-air heat pumps are only for residential buildings. Biomass is only in limited circumstances. The installer, not this website, decides whether your address qualifies.

What this site can and cannot do

A listing is not an MCS certificate and it is not a Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher. If the record shows Gas Safe, NICEIC, NAPIT, TrustMark or FENSA, that detail was already on the record. It does not mean the business can redeem this grant.

Heating businesses you can phone are on the plumbing and heating list, including London and Manchester. For a gas boiler price, rather than a heat pump grant, read what sits inside a price for a replacement boiler. Low-income insulation and heating help in England, through the council, is the Warm Homes Local Grant.

Questions on this scheme

Can I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme myself?

No. Ofgem’s property-owner guidance, version 5.1, says the scheme is installer-led and you cannot apply yourself. You choose an MCS-certified installer. That installer applies, and Ofgem contacts you to confirm consent.

Does every heat pump get £9,000?

No. The £9,000 grant is for an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump in an eligible off-gas-grid property that is replacing oil or LPG heating. Applications properly made from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027. Self-build properties are not eligible for that uplift. The usual air-to-water and ground-source grant in the same guidance is £7,500.
