Gas Safe register: who can work on gas in a home.

Work on a gas appliance in a domestic premises is for a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified for that appliance. A phone number on this site is not that registration. If you smell gas, call the emergency line before you call a list.

Checked 13 October 2026 against HSE and National Gas. This page is for Great Britain. The Malta directory does not use Gas Safe.

Gas Safe appears on a record only when the record already has it. Local Trades UK does not issue the card and does not guarantee the work.

The rule HSE states

HSE’s domestic gas questions say anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must be a Gas Safe registered engineer, and competent in that area of gas work. The categories are on the back of the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. If you are unsure, HSE says you can call Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or check the register.

HSE’s page for employers says that in domestic properties, work on gas fittings must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified to do the work, and that it is illegal for anyone else to do it. The card shows a photograph, what work the engineer is qualified to do, and whether the qualifications are in date. Asking for the card is the check. A line of text on a directory is not a substitute for it.

HSE’s note on who can do a gas safety check also draws a line through the heating job. A person who is not registered may install water pipes and radiators. Work on the gas boiler itself, and the final connection of the water pipework to the boiler, must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A registered engineer is not there to sign off gas work that someone else has already done.

If you smell gas

National Gas says to call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. The line is free and open 24 hours. It is also the number National Gas gives for a carbon monoxide emergency. Their safety steps are: do not smoke or light matches, do not turn electrical switches on or off, open doors and windows, turn off the meter at the control handle unless the meter is in the cellar, then call 0800 111 999.

A boiler that loses pressure without any smell of gas is a different note: a boiler that keeps losing pressure. A price for replacing the boiler, once an engineer has said that is the job, is what sits inside a price for a replacement boiler.

How a listing uses the words Gas Safe

On the plumbing and heating list, including London and Manchester, Gas Safe is shown only when it is already on that record. You still check the card when the engineer arrives. Get contact details opens the list. It does not book the engineer and it does not confirm the registration.

HSE’s description of the Gas Safe Register covers piped natural gas and LPG work in Great Britain, and also Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Guernsey. That geography is the register’s. It is not the Malta directory on this website.

Questions on this rule

Does a plumbing listing on this site mean the person is Gas Safe registered?

Only if Gas Safe is already printed on that record. Local Trades UK does not award Gas Safe registration and does not guarantee the work. HSE says you should check the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, which shows the categories of work they are qualified to do.

What do I do if I smell gas?

Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, 24 hours, free to call. National Gas says to open doors and windows, avoid flames, avoid turning electrical switches on or off, and turn off the meter at the control handle unless the meter is in the cellar.
