Heat pump savings calculator, on rates you type.

Useful heat is your annual gas use times the boiler efficiency. The heat pump’s electricity is that heat divided by the SPF you enter. Each cost is those kilowatt hours times your pence per kWh. The page does not look up a tariff.

Published 13 October 2026. Amounts in pounds. The form starts at 92% and an SPF of 3.0.

Compare the unit costs

Kilowatt hours for heating and hot water, from a yearly bill or statement.

Pence per kWh, from your bill. This page does not store a rate.

Pence per kWh, from your bill.

Percent. The box starts at 92 so the assumption is visible.

Seasonal performance factor. The box starts at 3.0. Change it to the figure you were given.

Pounds. Leave blank to skip. It is not taken off the annual difference. Read the amount on the grant page first.

Assumptions, units and limits

Read the unit rates on your bill. They are usually in pence per kWh. Gas use is the kilowatt hours that cover heating and hot water for a year. Standing charges are left out, and so is the cost of the installation.

12,000 kWh of gas at 92% efficiency is 11,040 kWh of useful heat. Divided by an SPF of 3.0, that is 3,680 kWh of electricity. The annual unit cost is those kilowatt hours multiplied by the pence you type, then divided by 100.

  • The efficiency box starts at 92%, and the SPF box starts at 3.0, so those assumptions are visible. Change both. An older boiler can be lower. A quoted SPF for a named unit can differ, and a poor design can land lower.
  • SPF here means useful heat divided by electricity over a year. Hot water can use more electricity per unit of heat than space heating. This page uses one SPF for the whole gas total.
  • A grant is a one-off payment. If you type one, it is shown beside the result and is not subtracted. Read whether you can still apply on the grant page.
  • Gas use is limited to 200,000 kWh. Each unit rate is limited to 200 pence. SPF is limited to 6.
  • Pounds are for the United Kingdom lists. The Malta directory uses euro, so this comparison does not apply there.

Read the scheme, then phone an installer

The difference is a unit-cost comparison on the rates you typed. It is not a bill for next year, and it is not a price for the installation. Open a plumbing and heating list for London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds or Bristol and phone the business yourself. There is no account. This site does not pass the job on, and it does not promise a reply.

A heat pump installed with a grant is arranged with the installer named on the grant page. Gas work that stays on the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. A qualification appears on a listing only when the record already has it.

Questions about this comparison

Does this page look up my tariff?

No. You type the gas use and the pence per kWh. The sum stays in the browser, and the page does not keep a tariff.

Is a grant taken off the annual difference?

No. A grant is a one-off payment toward an installation. If you type an amount, it is shown beside the result and is not subtracted. Whether you can still apply is on the grant page, with the date that page was checked.

Are standing charges included?

No. The result is the unit cost of the gas you entered against the unit cost of the electricity the heat pump would use on these assumptions.
