Whether ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme is still open.

The Great British Insulation Scheme has closed to new installations. ECO4’s end date moved to 31 December 2026 so energy suppliers can finish the targets they already have and put failed installations right. That date is not a new open grant for every home.

Checked 13 October 2026. These were Great Britain schemes. Northern Ireland was outside them. The Malta directory is not part of either scheme.

This page does not take an ECO4 or GBIS application. A closed window stays closed.

The Great British Insulation Scheme has ended

The government response on extending the ECO4 end date, updated 23 January 2026, says GBIS ended as planned on 31 March 2026. Ofgem’s page for homeowners and tenants says the scheme is now closed to new installations, and that it ended in April 2026. There is no application to start on this site.

What the ECO4 extension is for

The same government response says ECO4 is extended by nine months and ends on 31 December 2026. The reason given is extra time for obligated suppliers to meet existing targets, and for the supply chain to remediate installations that were not compliant. The response says the extension is not there to expand the scope or the scale of the scheme. Targets are not increased. There will be no successor supplier obligation after ECO4, and no carry-over into a later obligation.

That means a sentence such as “ECO4 is open until the end of 2026” is easy to misread. Suppliers still have a duty until that date. A household is not guaranteed a new measure because the date moved. Whether a supplier is still using a particular home toward the remaining target is the supplier’s decision. If an installation you already had has failed its checks, the extension is partly so that remediation can be finished. Go back to the installer or the supplier that did the work.

The government response points households who are not eligible for ECO4 toward other schemes, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Warm Homes: Local Grant. Those are written up separately: whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is still open, and whether the Warm Homes Local Grant can pay for the work.

Questions on these schemes

Can I still apply for the Great British Insulation Scheme?

No. The government response updated on 23 January 2026 says GBIS ended on 31 March 2026. Ofgem’s page for homeowners says the scheme is closed to new installations.

Does ECO4 staying open until December 2026 mean any household can join?

No. The same government response says the extension to 31 December 2026 is so energy suppliers can meet existing targets and remediate non-compliant installations. It is not an increase in the size of the scheme, and there is no successor supplier obligation after ECO4. A household that wants a public application in England should look at the Warm Homes Local Grant.
